Nauru History: Discovery of Nauru

1798 - A British navigator named as Captain John Fearn, who was sailing past Nauru while travelling from New Zealand to the China Seas, first encountered this island and later he named it as Pleasant Island.(The name remained for almost 90 years until the Germans came)

Around 1830 - Naurans were somehow in contact with the Europeans through their whaling ships and other traders. This trade involved the Alcoholic stuff as well as arms.

1830 - The First Europeans to live on the Nauru Island, named in history as Patrick Burke and John Jones, were Irish convicts who were sent to NorfolkIsland in Exile.


1830-1841 - John Jones remains the first and last dictator of the island in the history, who banished and killed lots of beach combers during his era. He remained in power till 1841.

1841 - Jones was banished from the island finally by the people of Nauru, this leaving Nauru again to its clan and tribal systems.

1841-1878 - The Alcohol and the fire arms spreading quite a lot during this era among all the 12 tribes of Nauru.
